Civil Ceremony in Venice: Sara & Andy’s Winter Elopement at Palazzo Cavalli

Today’s charming elopement takes us to one of the most romantic cities in the world. Famous for its canals, narrow calli, graceful bridges and magical atmosphere, Venice is an extraordinary setting for a civil ceremony in Venice and an unforgettable Italian elopement.

Knowing that they wanted a destination wedding in Italy, Sara and Andy, a friendly couple from New York City, reached out to Leoeventi’s founder, Monica, as soon as they started planning their big day. They had their hearts set on an elopement on Lake Como. However, they also wanted a January wedding, and Monica advised them that the lake is very cold at that time of year, with many hotels and activities closed for the season.

After exploring other Italian destinations, the couple excitedly chose to elope in Venice instead. Winter in Venice is cool, but wonderfully quiet: we always recommend Venice between September and May, to avoid the intense summer heat and the largest crowds.

A Civil Ceremony at Palazzo Cavalli

Sara and Andy wanted a legally binding wedding, and for a civil ceremony in Venice there is no more iconic setting than Palazzo Cavalli. Overlooking the Grand Canal in the heart of the city, this historic palace is where the City of Venice celebrates its civil weddings. Its elegant rooms and spectacular views over the water make it one of the most beautiful places to marry in Italy.

A Sunlit Winter Day in Venice

On the day of their wedding, the sky was clear and the sun was shining over the lagoon. Sara and Andy began their celebration with a first look in front of Venice’s iconic gondolas, a precious moment captured by a talented local photographer.

To make the most of the warmest hours and the soft winter light, the couple continued their photo session before the ceremony. Their photographer knew every corner of the city, and together they discovered some of Venice’s most beautiful hidden spots. As Sara and Andy walked through the calli in their wedding attire, it felt like a scene from a film, and passers-by could not help but stop and smile.

Saying “I Do” Overlooking the Grand Canal

Then it was time to head to Palazzo Cavalli for their civil ceremony. In front of a small group of their closest guests, Sara and Andy exchanged their vows and rings, and signed the marriage documents that made their wedding official. With big smiles, they savoured the moment on one of the palace’s balconies above the Grand Canal.

After a few more photos around Venice and a wonderful celebration dinner, their day came to an end. It wasn’t the Lake Como wedding they had first imagined, but it turned out even better than they had dreamed.

Planning a Civil Ceremony in Venice

A civil ceremony in Venice requires documents from your home country, appointments with the local authorities and an interpreter if you do not speak Italian. We take care of every step, so you can simply enjoy the day. Discover more about eloping in Venice, read about another civil ceremony in Rome, or explore our elopement packages in Italy.
