Civil Ceremony in Rome: Maria & Jerardo’s Legally Binding Elopement
Maria and Jerardo travelled from the United States with a very clear wish: they wanted a civil ceremony in Rome that would make their elopement legally binding.
They were not looking for a symbolic ceremony followed by the legal formalities at home. For them, the moment they exchanged vows in Italy also had to be the moment they officially became married.
A civil wedding abroad requires more preparation, but it was an important part of their vision. We assisted them throughout the process, from the paperwork and consular appointments to the legalisation of their documents, the interpreter and the witnesses required for the ceremony.
A Private Alternative to the Campidoglio
The Campidoglio is the best-known setting for a civil ceremony in Rome. Its position in the heart of the city is undeniably impressive, but ceremonies can be scheduled closely together and the experience does not suit every couple.
Maria and Jerardo wanted somewhere quieter, where their civil ceremony could feel more private and less hurried.
After extensive research, we found an alternative in a historic town approximately 45 minutes from central Rome. The civil ceremony could take place inside an elegant historic palazzo, in a frescoed room overlooking formal gardens.
It offered exactly what the couple had been hoping for: the legal validity of an official civil marriage, combined with a setting that felt intimate and full of character.
The Paperwork Behind a Legal Wedding in Italy
In the days before the wedding, Maria and Jerardo attended their appointment at the United States Consulate to obtain the necessary Nulla Osta, accompanied by Angela, Leoeventi’s Senior Event Coordinator. Based in Rome, Angela knows the city intimately, and her presence made every step easier for the couple.
From there, we handled the legalisation of their documents and coordinated the remaining requirements with the local authorities. We also provided the witnesses and arranged for an interpreter to be present during the civil ceremony.
These practical steps are an essential part of a legally binding wedding in Italy. For a couple planning from another country, the process can feel complicated because it involves different offices, appointments and documents that must be completed in the correct order.
Our role was to make sure that every requirement had been handled before the wedding day, allowing Maria and Jerardo to arrive at the ceremony knowing that everything was in place.
A Civil Ceremony in a Frescoed Palazzo
On the morning of the wedding, private transportation took the couple from Rome to the historic town chosen for their ceremony.
Maria and Jerardo were completely on their own, without family or guests. With the witnesses and interpreter already organised, the ceremony remained intimate while meeting all the legal requirements of an Italian civil marriage.
Inside the frescoed room, overlooking the gardens of the palazzo, they exchanged their vows and officially became married.
It was simple, private and meaningful — precisely the experience they had wanted.
Wedding Portraits Through the Streets of Rome
After the ceremony, we arranged the return journey into central Rome for their wedding photography.
The contrast between the quiet palazzo and the energy of the city gave the day two very different chapters. Maria and Jerardo moved through some of Rome’s most recognisable locations, taking photographs at the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain.
Rome does not need elaborate decoration to create a memorable wedding setting. Its architecture, streets and monuments give each part of the day its own atmosphere, from the scale and history of the Colosseum to the movement and theatrical character of the Trevi Fountain.
November proved to be a particularly pleasant time for their Rome elopement. Although it is already considered part of the cooler season, the temperature remained comfortable and allowed the couple to enjoy their photography around the city.
The day ended with a romantic dinner for two — an unhurried conclusion to a wedding that had combined legal formality, privacy and the unmistakable atmosphere of Rome.
There was also one stop that Maria had requested personally. A lifelong admirer of Dior, she wanted a portrait in front of the Dior boutique in Piazza di Spagna. It became one of the most personal images of the day — a playful, elegant moment that captured her style as much as the city around her.
Planning a Civil Ceremony in Rome
Maria and Jerardo’s wedding shows that a civil ceremony in Rome does not have to follow the most obvious route.
For couples who want their marriage in Italy to be legally recognised, the paperwork and official requirements are unavoidable. The experience surrounding those formalities, however, can still be thoughtful and personal.
By looking beyond the most familiar ceremony venues, we were able to give Maria and Jerardo both things they cared about: a legally binding marriage and an intimate setting that felt right for them.
